ANZAP: “Exploring the Conversational Model and Dissociation” seminar 2, Dunedin

July 6 @ 9:00 am - 12:30 pm

$90

ANZAP – The Conversational Model – Dunedin, NZ

Self-Hate and the Hated Other – A Psychodynamic Approach

Clients who come with complex PTSD, trauma histories, developmental harm, and diagnosed personality disorders will also come with a range of intense negative emotions. Often the most difficult, and deeply held, is hatred towards themselves. This may manifest in self harm, eating disorders, and chronic suicidal ideation.

At other times hatred is turned outward and experienced as hate towards other people, or even hatred towards everyone in the world.

This seminar investigates how hate can impinge upon, and harm the client, or others, and offers ways of attending to, and ameliorating this harm.

Clinical examples will be used to illustrate this difficult clinical problem. This is a 3.5 hour seminar with 30 minute break midway.

About our presenters

Dr. Nick Bendit is a staff specialist psychiatrist working at the Centre for Psychotherapy (Newcastle, Australia), a publicly funded outpatient psychotherapy unit offering long-term psychotherapy for patients with borderline personality disorder, eating disorders, and dissociative disorders (DID).

Nick treats patients, supervises and teaches in the Conversational Model, and also treats patients, and teaches mental health clinicians, in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). The Centre for Psychotherapy has completed a randomised controlled trial comparing the outcome for patients with borderline personality disorder treated with either DBT or the Conversational Model.

Nick is the Director of Training for ANZAP’s 3 year psychodynamic psychotherapy training in Conversational Model.

Kim Hopkirk is a New Zealander, and a psychodynamic psychotherapist who trained in the Conversational Model 19 years ago. Kim has a busy therapy and supervisory practice in Newcastle, Australia. Her psychotherapy training prior to CM was somatic psychotherapy and gestalt therapy which continue to inform her work.
