About the presentations…

Dr Helen Florence will consider some of the challenges psychotherapists face when working with religion and spirituality in therapy. She will interweave findings from her PhD research with her personal experience and illustrations from client work.

Sandra Winton will explore the question of how religions material can be approached in therapy.  She will share clinical material, looking at how the therapist’s positions on religious matters can interact with those of the client in the therapeutic dialogue.

Dr Ingo Lambrecht will focus on Spiritual Emergencies: The dialectic of distress and spirituality. In this exploration, different spiritual emergencies, their traditions, and pathways will be outlined. Some indigenous and current models, as well as psychotherapeutic interventions in regards to spiritual emergencies will be considered.

and the presenters …

Dr Helen Florence is a psychotherapist who works in private practice in Auckland. She has a particular interest in working with clients whose religious perspectives are implicated in their psychological difficulties.  She has long been interested in religion and spirituality in therapy and in 2015 completed a PhD in this area.

Sandra Winton has practiced as a psychotherapist, first in a church social work agency and then in private practice, for over 25 years.  She has been a professed Dominican sister for nearly twice as long.  Trained first in Self-Psychology, Sandra now practices within a more analytic frame.

Dr. Ingo Lambrecht is a consultant clinical psychologist working at Manawanui, Māori Mental Health Service in Auckland. He has worked in and written widely on the cultural-clinical interface work in different cultural settings, and was privileged to undergo an intense shamanic training as a sangoma, a South African traditional healer.
