SUMMARY:EMDR Basic Training\, Auckland
DESCRIPTION:EMDR Flyer \nDr Francine Shapiro is the originator and developer of the EMDR approach to psychotherapy. Rigorous research has established the efficacy of EMDR as a front line treatment for PTSD.  Research has now extended well beyond the trauma field with supportive studies in the areas of phobias\, panic disorder\, grief\, sexual dysfunction\, chemical dependency\, sexual addiction\, pathological gambling\, dissociative disorders\, performance enhancement\, somatic disorders and a variety of other diagnosis. \nIn 1990 Dr Shapiro founded the EMDR Institute which today provides trainings throughout Europe\, USA\, Canada\, Asia and South America. It is the only training available in Australia and New Zealand which has this international recognition and maintains the internationally required high standards. \nThe EMDR Institute Basic training is an accredited EMDR training which is conducted over six days to ensure that participants may optimise their exposure to the practice of EMDR with six separate practicum sessions.  The six days are broken into two\, 3-day trainings named Weekend 1 and Weekend 2.  Each three day training is followed by a five hour supervision component.  Group supervision dates are usually determined by the participants at the training.  The training is an interactive learning experience participants are required to bring a minor issue to address at the training. \nTrainer\nSigmund Burzynski is a member of the EMDR Institute faculty and is in private psychological practice in Geelong\, Australia.  He has an extensive clinical background and has worked in the Victorian prison system for six years.  He has been in private practice since 1994 and an EMDR Institute trainer since 1998. He has provided EMDR training in Hong Kong\, Singapore\, New Zealand\, and throughout Australia.  In 2010 he presented a case study on trauma based anger at the inaugural EMDR Asia conference in Bali.  He is also extensively involved in the supervision and training of psychologists and has lectured on EMDR at the University of Indonesia\, and Tarumanagora University Indonesia.  He provides supervision and training to psychologists nationally and internationally. \nEligibility\nThose eligible to attend the training include psychologists\, psychiatrists\, social workers and counsellors. Applicants must have level 8 NZQA qualification and full registration with their professional body. (please refer to the EMDR NZ web site) \n

SUMMARY:EMDR Therapy with grief and mourning\, Mt Maunganui
DESCRIPTION:Grief workshop brochure \nThis workshop will focus on integrating EMDR therapy into the treatment of grief and mourning. The death of a loved one can be a time of unparalleled distress and adaptation to the loss can be very challenging. Even when uncomplicated\, bereavement can result in significant psychological\, behavioral\, social\, physical\, and economic consequences (Osterweis\, Solomon\, & Green\, 1984; Solomon & Rando\, 2007\, 2012\, 2015). EMDR therapy can be integrated into treatment of grief and mourning to process the distressing memories and present trigger that complicate the bereavement\, and enable the mourner to assimilate and accommodate the loss. \nAttachment theory increases our understanding of complicated grief and mourning and explains individual differences in grief reactions. Research has shown that attachment style is an important determinant of how one grieves. The loss of a significant person in adulthood can evoke many of the same feelings and responses that accompanied separation from an attachment figure during childhood (Kosminsky & Jordan\, 2016). Consequently\, understanding attachment theory can guide the EMDR clinician in identification and treatment of the maladaptively stored information complicating the grief.   Other frameworks important for understanding grief and mourning and guiding treatment will also be presented. including Continuing Bonds (Marwit and Klass\, 1996)\, Dual Process Model (Stroebe and Schut\, 2010)\, and the “R” processes (Rando\, 1993) which outlines the processes that are necessry for adaptive assimilation and accommodation of the loss. \nThis presentation will discuss grief and mourning\, case conceptualization and target (memory) selection and sequencing)\, factors that can complicate bereavement\, and how EMDR therapy can be integrated into an overall treatment plan. The eight phases of EMDR therapy\, and three prongs (past\, present\, future) with grief and mourning\, with video tape illustrations\, will be discussed. \nAn emphasis of this workshop is an analysis of clinical material through presentation of video tapes of EMDR therapy sessions.   Video tapes not only show the content of clinical dynamics of grief and mourning\, but also the “art” of EMDR\, including the pacing\, timing\, mechanics\, cognitive interweaves\, and relational aspects of EMDR. \nLearning Objectives \n\nUnderstand grief and mourning\, and factors that complicate the grief\nIdentify the processes necessary for assimilation and accommodation of loss\nUnderstand attachment theory and its relation to grief and mourning\nUnderstand how to integrate EMDR therapy into a treatment framework for grief and loss.\n\nTeaching Methods \nLecture\, video tapes of sessions\, demonstrations \nTrainer \nDr. Roger Solomon is a psychologist specializing in the areas of trauma and grief. He has been Senior Faculty with the EMDR Institute since 1993 and teaches EMDR internationally. He is a consultant with the US Senate\, providing direct services (including EMDR) through the in-house Senate Employee Assistance Program. Dr. Solomon has provided consultation and direct services to law enforcement agencies\, including the FBI\, Secret Service\, and Polizia di Stato in Italy\, and has worked extensively with families of police officers killed in the line of duty. Dr. Solomon has extensively collaborated with Onno van der Hart (Senior author of “The Haunted Self)\, and is part of an international team that has written articles on utilization of EMDR therapy with complex trauma. He is a visiting professor with Salesiana University in Rome\, Italy and is a consultant with psychology programs for La Sapienza (University of Rome) in Rome. He has authored or coauthored 46 articles and book chapters pertaining to EMDR therapy\, grief\, complex trauma\, acute trauma and law enforcement \nCost (AUD)\n\n$660\n$400 for attendees also attending the Master Class\n$200 for attendees who have attended three or more Master Class trainings\n\n

SUMMARY:Treating the effects of childhood abuse\, Auckland
DESCRIPTION:This seminar is for all clinicians who provide treatment/therapy for adults and adolescents who have experienced any form of childhood abuse or neglect. \nYoung adults who were abused and/or neglected in childhood are at greater risk of a variety of problematic behaviors and mental health issues\, including suicidality\, self-injury\, aggression\, substance abuse\, eating disorders\, PTSD\, and depression. Many of these difficulties are seen as symptoms of a personality disorder\, or as criminal behavior requiring incarceration. However\, emerging research indicates that they are more accurately understood as coping responses and conditioned reactions to triggered childhood memories and inadequate emotional regulation capacities. \nCalling on his new book (Treating risky and compulsive behavior in trauma survivors\, Guilford\, 2019) Professor John Briere (University of Southern California\, USA) presents an integrated approach to the treatment of childhood trauma\, with a specific focus on young adults\, including those who have been marginalized based on gender identity\, sexual orientation\, or social status. The special needs of male survivors will be explored\, given their greater risk of abuse-reactive behavior and the relative lack of available\, evidence-based treatment for this group. Specific interventions will be described\, including trigger management; urge surfing; mindfulness; harm reduction\, titrated exposure\, and relational processing. \nJohn Briere\nJohn Briere\, Ph.D.\, is Professor of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine\, University of Southern California\, and Director of the USC Adolescent Trauma Training Center of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network. A past president of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies\, he is recipient of the Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Science of Trauma Psychology from the American Psychological Association\, and the William N. Friedrich Lecturer: Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Child Psychology from the Mayo Clinic. He is author or co-author of over 140 articles and chapters\, 15 books\, and 9 trauma-related psychological tests. Dr. Briere’s newest book is Treating Risky and Compulsive Behaviors in Trauma Survivors (Guilford\, 2019). \nTo register\nEarly bird registration until Friday 31 January 2020: $310 (inc GST) \nFrom 1 February to 6 March 2020: $350 (inc GST) \nRegistration information \nExpression of Interest \n

SUMMARY:Child & Family Therapy Workshop\, Wellington
DESCRIPTION:Pre Conference Workshop March 2020 (PDF) \n“Tūngia te ururua\, kia tupu whakaritorito te tupu o te harakeke” \nClear the undergrowth so that the new shoots of the flax will grow \nNZAP’s Child and Whanau Advocacy group are excited to present two innovative approaches to providing Child and Family therapy\, from Auckland and Dunedin. \nAll NZAP members and related professionals are welcome; this will be a good opportunity to meet and talk with colleagues from the NZAP Child and Whanau Advocacy Group and discuss the social and political impacts on child therapy. Morning tea and lunch are provided. \nWorkshop 1 – Playful Approach to Serious Subject\nSupport for children’s emotional and mental health through arts therapy in educational settings. \nAnna-Michele Hantler and colleagues of Arts & Play Therapy in Education (APTE) will share findings of their pilot project working in a South Auckland primary school\, delivering group and individual arts and play therapy. They will show original material from children\, parents and school and review what worked well and what didn’t. They will also describe the educational “fit” of group therapy work and the use of circle time techniques with puppets and games. \n“Our preliminary findings with schools interested in having child therapists indicate they need help with developing pro-social and emotional development techniques. Group work and co-facilitation is a way we can support this staff development and probably easier for them to fund.” Anna-Michele Hantler \nhttps://www.boosted.org.nz/projects/arts-play-therapy-at-park-estate-school \nWorkshop 2 – Reinvigorating Family Therapy\nAt one time Aotearoa was one of the foremost countries in the world in the development of family therapy. Sadly\, this has disappeared in most parts of the country. \nJoy Hayward and a group of colleagues have been meeting with a family for weekly family therapy sessions\, sometimes as co-therapists and sometimes as part of an observing team. They will share their experience of family dynamics\, of their groups dynamics and some of the theoretical background that has guided them. \nJoy Hayward trained as a child psychotherapist at a time when working with the family was an integral part of working with children. A thorough family assessment was vital to avoid further pathologising the child. In fact\, the child was often congratulated on finding a way to develop behaviour that enabled the family to get to therapy. On the eve of retirement\, Joy is striving to pass on the knowledge from the excellent training she received. With new government mental health initiatives there is hope and scope for a resurgence in family therapy as one of the essential ways of improving the life of children and in tackling our appalling mental health statistics. \nTo register\nPlease email lyanda.info@gmail.com \nRegistrations open on 2 September. \n
